Apple today published its annual Best of 2017 charts for the App Store, iTunes Store, and iBooks Store, highlighting the top media content and trends across 2017. Pros: The best overall speed test scores for macOS. Friendly, charming interface. Excellent privacy policies. Unique features specifically for macOS. Plays nice with Netflix. Cons: Few server locations. No P2P or BitTorrent allowed. Bottom Line: TunnelBear has always offered a great experience and excellent protection with its VPN software, and it shines on macOS. With a robust network of servers, a killer interface, strong speed test scores, and unique features for macOS, it's an Editor's Choice. ![]() Pros: Affordable, flexible pricing structure. Nifty Touch Bar integration. P2P and BitTorrent allowed. How much for a mac mouse?. Supports OpenVPN. Specialized servers. Information-dense client. Cons: Lackluster overall speed performance. App Store and downloadable versions offer different features. Small number of servers. Bottom Line: KeepSolid VPN Unlimited is a solid service with unparalleled flexible pricing, and robust security technology, but its interface feels clunky for a Mac app, and its speed tests results were only fair.

![]() For years I've been in the dark and analogue only, but now that high rez digital is getting cheaper I am seeing the light. I've recently discovered 24/96 and 24/48 playback via DVD-video playback and my 'hot-rodded' Pioneer bdp-51fd is singing (direct to analogue out via wolfson voltage out dac). Have had and still have a Samsung HD-841 for SACD and just could not see the light. The DVD-video burns of 24/96 on the Pioneer blu-ray player has really caught my interest and now I've become aware of the wonders of the mythical SACD-R and its compatibility with the old Samsung (which is about as exciting as a wet fart since SACD over analogue outs not great with this player.) With the hotrod Pioneer I'd be happy to stay at 24/96 playback, but can't do 6.1 24/96, etc. And so SACD-R has a big appeal since it give me hope of getting this material onto disc. Still really, really like DVD-video audio CDs in 24/96 since any dvd player will play them and I'd like to hook this into awesome car sterereo (and call me crazy, but not aware of SACD inroads so much.) So given the projectile vomit sound quality of the Samsung HD-841 analogue outs, what is the best SACD or ISO image player(s) that can be had and what are the budget plays? (throw in car audio too since I've got an $8k system needings some Rez!) As it stands I'll probably play around with my Sammy to test the SACD-R format, but trying to come up with some nice solutions. Aware of some locals with the nice PS audio stuff and some kind of MAC super compact media servers, but that is heading to $10k or so looking for something a little more bang for the buck with some upgrade possiblities if my eyes stay wide shut. Another huge issue for DVD playback of audio is the 48 or 96khz restriction. Lots of material in 44.1 and it seems upconverting to 48 not the best sonic option. My search so far for the best SACD-R player via analog out has ruled out the Denon players due to reliability issues and issues with DVD-r media. Own a Samsung and will start some experimentation with that player, but have not located the 'Confirmed to play after (custom) firmware update' source. ![]() (Pursuing contact with Bob Squires Jr, but new member here; ) (My own Samsung HD841 is quite bad on analog outs, but will give it another try in the system in the next few days) The Yamaha seem to not offer the best sound, so out. Need to research Sony units. The Oppos scare me and the BDP-93 and 95 might be real contenders if not for the issue of higher price and the problem that if firmware has been upgraded to later version that blocks SACD-R, one cannot go back. The earlier Oppos are not contenders with the Pioneer. Cambridge Audio stuff built in same factory as Oppo and close friend has a failed Azur 740C, so skeptical, but the Cambridge Audio Azur 650BD and 751BD are contenders, but pretty expensive used. Almost bought a Pioneer Elite DV-79AVi ($100 local pickup), but not an SACD-R player, but what a tank with an IEC. The Pioneer DV-58AV is a newer, non-Elite unit, but still has a robust build with better DAC than the older Elite. It is considered more upgradeable and despite not being on the SACD-R list, it infact does play SACD-R for sure and is US version of Pioneer DV-LX50 which is on list. It is the leading contender, but it eats me up that my own BDP-51FD is considered a better CD player than either of these units and my own experience with 24/96 via DVD-v burns is impressive. (My 51FD is hotrodded in a manner that cannot be replicated on either of these units.) The Pioneer DV-58AV can go for close to $200 used right now and is the leading contender especially if I can grab one near $100. Ric Schulz used to upgrade these and might have a few more tricks up his sleeve: So, for now the modded Pioneer DV-58AV might be the king of the SACD-R players with all the mods. Still looking and reviewing, so please poast! So, the Primare BD32 is not on the SACD-R player list, but does play them as it is based on Oppo BDP-93. Their design spec freely admits this; At $6000 new this is the best SACD-R player, but don't update the firmware or then it is worthless for SACD-R. The Primare BD32 appears to be the best stock player: 'The stereo output circuitry uses the flagship Crystal DSD DAC CS4398 in conjunction with Primare’s signature fully-balanced analogue output stage comprising Burr-Brown OPA2134 OP-Amps, WIMA and EPCOS polypropylene filter capacitors and large MELF resistors; and a single-ended output stage comprising a single MOSFET transistor fed by an active current source rather than passive resistors.' The Marantz UD7007 (used ~$700) was rated close to the Primare above at 9.5/10 and was also not on the list. It seems many early Universal Blu-ray/SACD players have a chance of playing SACD-R as they DVD-R is part of the Blu-ray specification. With Microsoft’s major push of Office 365, I think it important to briefly touch base on the entire update process. While Office 365 will, unless reconfigured, automatically updates itself based on the Update Channel (you can learn more about Update Channel by reviewing ) you have chosen to use (and yes, I too, never made any such choice and was automatically setup on the Deferred Channel). To uninstall Office for Mac 2011 move the applications to the Trash. Once you've removed everything, empty the Trash and restart your Mac to complete the process. Before you remove Office for Mac 2011, quit all Office applications and make sure there's nothing in Trash that you want to keep. ![]() This, on the surface, sounds like a brilliant approach, but as we have recently seen (updates 1705, 1706, 1707) sometimes updates can introduce new bugs that are more problematic then the ones they are supposedly resolving. With Office 365, much to most people’s dismay, one can no longer simply open the Control Panel to uninstall an update. Microsoft no longer offers a graphic interface to manage the updates and one must use the “DOS” command prompt to uninstall updates (or as Microsoft now refers to it as “Revert to an earlier version”). You can read Microsoft’s instructions on uninstalling an update by using the following link Now let’s make a few corrections and additions to their article! Not Limited to Only Uninstalling Updates First and foremost, I think it important to point out that while this command can be used to uninstall an update and revert back to any build of your choosing (probably it primary function), it can also be used to perform an upgrade. Version/Build, Even Microsoft Can’t Keep Things Straight! In the article, they mention that you have to execute a command similar to the one below officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.xxxx.yyyy and then later they explain 16.0. Xxxx.yyyy represents the full version number Yet when you look at the you’ll notice that the versions is actually a 4 character long number (1705, 1706, 1707, ). So in fact, the xxxx.yyyy does not represent the version number but rather the build number! Whenever performing a reversion or upgrade, I’d urge you to take note of the current Version/Build No of your installation should the change not be beneficial and you wish to return back to the initial state. Your Update Channel is Critical Another thing to be aware of is that even though say 1708 is available in the current channel, but is not in the Deferred channel, if you are using the Deferred channel you cannot upgrade to 1708. You would first need to switch update channels to make that version/build available to your installation and then you could perform the upgrade. ![]() To learn more about changing update channels look over. What Build Number Do I Want/Need? One of the biggest issues is figuring out which version/build you actually want to implement. To determine this, I have found that you have to use the following pages: • • Especially the latter can be useful to see exactly what each build implemented. Typically, if you suddenly encounter a new issue, I’d determine my current build number and then try reverting to previous build number. If that didn’t work, then I look to go further back, and so on. Also, you could see if there was a more recent build number available, and first try performing an update (moving forwards is always preferable than going backwards, no). Basically, a DISKPART script is a text file with a.txt extension. Collecting all the DISKPART commands from Part 1, we simply add some remarks to document our work. Note: lines that start with rem are ignored when the script runs. DISKPART scripts run from the Command Prompt using this syntax diskpart /s Z: MyScript.txt. In this command, Z: identifies the drive where the script resides. We save such scripts at the root of our install media. That means USB flash drives for physical installs, and in ISO files for Hyper-V virtual machines. Any available storage location will work. Thus, for instance, if you cannot add files to an install DVD, save the script on a flash drive instead. Running the script There’s one small issue with this script, though. Using GPT we don’t always know the drive letter for our install media or the media where the DISKPART script resides. In fact, those values depend on knowing if the disk is new, and all space unallocated, or if it is partitioned and formatted with drive letters assigned. ![]() In other words, YMMV. That said, there’s an easy workaround. Before running the script, we need to know the install media’s volume label. That way, we can figure out which drive letter Windows setup assigns to that device. Knowing that, we can call the DISKPART script from the correct device. We saved our DISKPART script as DiskConfig.txt on root of our Windows 10 PRO install media. This is a USB Flash drive labelled W10PRO_USB. The following command elicits the drive letter for any medium (DVD, flash drive, HDD partition) labelled W10PRO_USB. Then it then runs the DISKPART script DiskConfig.txt. Note: this command is a one-liner, even though word wrap breaks across 2 lines: for /f%X in (‘wmic volume get DriveLetter ^, Label ^| find “W10PRO_USB”‘) do DISKPART /s%X DiskConfig.txt In this command string, notice the%X value before the script filename. Here, this does not refer to drive X. Rather, it’s a variable that points to the media labeled W10PRO_USB. In fact, script variables are denoted with a single% sign at the command line. But you must use two% signs in batch files to make them work. That is, you’ll enter the text shown above that uses%X, but when you add that same command in a batch file, use%%X instead. Script Output Illustrated That’s it. When we boot Windows from our install media, a properly labeled flash drive must also be present (if the script is stored elsewhere). Then, we press SHIFT + F10 to open the Command Prompt. Finally, we enter the preceding command and let our partitioning script do its thing: Here’s the output from the script as it runs. [Click image for full-sized view; this version is hard to read!] In under 30 seconds, our boot/system drive is partitioned just the way we like it! There's something exciting about buying a new piece of software, unwrapping the packaging and slipping the disc into your Mac ready to install your new goodies. And, of course, the new Mac App Store has made the process of obtaining new software by a digital download just a few simple mouse clicks. Whichever method you prefer, the biggest drawback is the money you have to hand over. Forking out for your goods is a necessary evil, and the price of things is usually a good indicator of its quality. But the good news is it's not always that way, especially when it comes to Mac software. So, I figured it might worth putting together this article like this -- sharing my experience and hopefully it would save you a trip to Apple Genius Bar. What happened to my MacBook trackpad? I am on a MacBook Pro and as I can recall now, it all started with a temporary freeze on my Mac (unlike the classic issue though).about five seconds or so; I couldn't do anything. Short after that, I noticed my MacBook Pro started to act up — the cursor kept jumping around, web pages automatically opened and closed, screen resolution adjusted itself, etc. Magic Keyboard, Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, Magic Mouse 2, and Magic Trackpad 2 have a built-in rechargeable battery that lets you use the devices for extended periods between charges. New Listing Apple Macintosh Mac mouse M0100 platinum for 128K/512K/Plus WORKING For sale is a working Apple Macintosh mouse, model M0100 in the platinum color and made in Japan. I have tested all as working with a Macintosh Plus. ![]() This really scared me as my Mac was literally out of control. Things I tried but didn't work Although the erratic trackpad/cursor issue persisted at that time, I still could perform some basic operations though not that smooth. At first, I thought my Mac was infected, because the situation reminded me of viruses and malware issues back in the PC days. So I immediately opened and ran a full scan. Around 20 minutes later, no threats found (to my surprise). I then suspected my Mac internal hard drive was malfunctioning, so I went ahead and pulled out Disk Utility and several other apps to. Turned out the main drive is working fine without any problems. I also reset SMC and NVRAM on my MacBook Pro, thinking that would fix the issue as the symptoms I was facing were quite similar to what the Apple support articles describe. In case you don't know, resetting NVRAM and SMC is pretty easy. Check out and article from Apple. And guess what? Nope, the Mac cursor still kept jumping and clicking, and moving on its own after that. I also disconnected my Magic Mouse, USB flash drive, and unplugged the charger. The last thing I tried but didn't work either was performing software update via App Store. All these took me a few precious hours.until I finally fixed it with a simple trick. The solution? It's oddly simple! Checking an option called ' Ignore built-in trackpad when mouse or wireless trackpad is present' via the System Preferences setting. Here's how to do it step by step: Step 1: On your Mac desktop, click the Apple logo, and select System Preferences. Now the erratic cursor jumping issue should disappear. And you should be able to use your external mouse to navigate smoothly on your Mac. Why the solution isn't perfect I tried to uncheck that option above, and guess what.the trackpad problem appears AGAIN on my MacBook Pro. That means I can ONLY rely on the Apple Magic Mouse to navigate — which I'm okay with. But for those of you who don't have a mouse or you are used to relying on the trackpad for navigation, it can be troublesome. |
